oh dear sweet kaleb,
you're almost here!
we've had a shower for you,
now you've got all the gear
to arrive in style and comfort,
sweet boy,
with clothes and diapers,
a bumbo and toys.
we can't wait to meet you
cute little one,
your mom's getting bigger
that means you're almost done!
soon the turkey timer will pop,
the contractions will start,
a ride to the hospital,
from mommy's belly you'll depart!
so we pray for health
and safety and joy,
as you prepare to arrive
in our world, little boy!
congratulations leah! we love you, sis!!!
here are a few pictures from leah's shower. you can find the rest here.great job on hosting the shower, bekah! all of the little details were amazing! and so cute!

we used to have this saying with our friend rachael. here's the evolution...
1) gross!
2) capital "G"-ross (there was a song that went along with it, but i just can't do it justice in print)
3) then it just shortened to "capital"
what's my point, you ask? well we had a VERY unwelcome house guest this morning. thankfully i was not the one to spot it otherwise i'm fairly certain i'd still be shaking and possibly on my way to the hospital for heart-attack related issues.this sucker was texas sized...

jonah and i went to the cedar park library this morning to sign up for the summer reading program and look who was there!!!
jonah's all-time favorite: We-Me! and his new favorite: DAW-gheeeee!!! (aka. clifford)could a kid be more excited than this? i don't think so.
excuse me We-Me, i need to give you a kiss.
we-me, you're shorter than i thought you'd be.
say "honey!"
high five, cliffey doggie!
after we'd picked out some books and movies, pancake pig showed up! jonah was not as excited about her. he didn't really want a high five or to stand next to her. when i put him next to her to take his picture he just froze. this was the stance for about 30 seconds. not crying and not making eye contact. just frozen with shoulders tense.
ok, now that the pig left i can get back to enjoying my new favorite friend...
this is probably my most absolute favorite memory from the whole morning. the characters were hanging out in the lobby and kids would come and go, giving hugs and taking pictures with clifford (miss jane told us that winnie and pancake pig needed a hydration break). we were on our way out the door too, but jonah was just loving watching clifford so much that i didn't make him leave. at one point it was just us and clifford in the lobby. jonah kept waving and shrugging his shoulders smiling, and saying "DAW-ghee!!!" and i think because i kept squatting down next to jonah he decided that would be a good viewing angle to see the doggie, too. then clifford squatted down too. jonah kept laughing and looking back and forth from me to clifford. i love the hands on the knees...
thanks cedar park library! you made this kid's day!
the rest of the pics are here.

i thought i'd post a quick follow up to this post from earlier today. before bed tonight, before we put jammies on, i put jonah on his new potty just to start to get him familiar with it. he's not ready for serious potty training just yet, but i just thought we'd put it in the bathroom and let him get friendly with the idea of it. plus he very often announces when he's going #2, so i think that's one of the signs that he might be getting ready to be ready.
anyway, when i sat his naked little butt down on the potty he sat there very cautiously and giggled nervously. he then proceeded to stand up... and pee on the floor. do you ever feel like you're living in a sitcom? i do.
when i squeaked in surprise he got a little upset. i tried to remain calm and tell him that his pee pee goes in the potty. "put the pee pee in the potty, honey." after that he sat down to try again, but i think he got stage fright. he managed one drop. so hey, i guess this counts as jonah's first pee pee in the potty! who-ray!

...where are your snacks?
please do not panic, people! the potty is BRAND NEW from ikea. i just bought it last night.
i was sitting at my computer and i thought jonah was being a good little boy sitting on the floor next to me eating his snacks. when i looked down at him this is what i saw...and i mean what loving and caring mother wouldn't reach for her camera first before instructing her son that no, we do not eat out of our potty.
it was a one time deal. i swear. please do not call dcfs!

Deep Grief
"You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy."
Psalm 30:11 (NIV)
Devotion:
Sometimes when we lose things it causes a temporary panic that rises and falls in a mini-tidal wave fashion. Like earlier this year when I lost my camera with all our ski vacation pictures on it. The panic escalated, crested with some hand wringing and mind racing, and then slowly ebbed away.
But sometimes a loss cuts into your heart so viciously that it forever redefines who you are and how you think. It's what I call "deep grief." The kind that strains against everything you've ever believed. So much so you wonder how the promises that seemed so real on those thin Bible pages yesterday, could possibly stand up under the weight of enormous sadness today.
I once stood at the side of a casket too small to accept. Pink roses draped everywhere. And I watched my mom as she lay across the casket, refusing to let go. How could she let go? Part of her heart laid within, so quiet and so still.
I stood paralyzed. Just days ago we were doing everyday things and assuming that all of our lives stretched before us in spans of many, many years. And then suddenly it all stopped. In the flurry of funeral plans and memorial services we all operated on automatic. People were everywhere. Soft chatter filled in the gaps that our stunned silence could not. And enough food was brought in to feed the whole neighborhood.
But eventually people went back to their own lives. The soft chatter dissipated. The food stopped coming. And we were forced to carry on. Only we had deep grief wrapped about us that made our throats feel strangled and our feet stuck in mud.
I remember I tried to go to McDonalds to order a happy meal. But I couldn't. I sat in the drive-through with the speaker spouting words at me I couldn't process. She kept asking if she could take my order.
Yeah, I had an order. Take away my bloodshot eyes. Take away my desire to hurt the doctors that couldn't save my sister. Take away my anger toward God. And then take away my guilt for being the one that lived. I'll take all that with no onions and extra ketchup, please.
I drove away sobbing. How dare they offer happy meals. No one should be happy today. Or tomorrow. Or next year.
This is the reality of deep grief. Even when you love God and believe in His promises. Even when you know without a doubt that you will see your loved one again. Even when you know hope is still there.
It takes time.
It takes wading through an ocean of tears.
It takes finding a possession of your loved one that you thought was lost, and realizing God did that just to comfort you. It takes discovering one day that the sun still shines. It takes being caught off-guard when you catch yourself smiling… only to realize it's okay.
It takes prayer. It takes making the decision to stop asking for answers and start asking for perspective. It takes telling people to please not avoid saying her name - you want to hear it, over and over again.
Then one day you take off the blanket of deep grief. You fold it neatly and tuck it away. You no longer hate it or resist it. For underneath it, wondrous things have happened. Things that could have only come about when Divine hope intersected with a broken world.
And finally you can see years stretching before you once again. You look up, blow a kiss, wipe a tear and find it's still possible to dance.
In light of their own recent loss, may we all keep the family of Steven Curtis and Marybeth Chapman in our prayers for all the time it will take them to shed their deep grief and discover their dance again.
Dear Lord, Thank you for assuring us that your principles and promises hold true even when life seems to betray us. We praise You that Your love reaches to any depth we find ourselves in. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Reflections:
Death is a reality of life. So, how can you live more intentionally each day with those you love?
Power Verse:
2 Corinthians 1:2-4, "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God." (NIV)

me to jonah: did you go poopy?
jonah: (looks up at me. nods head.)
i think this is the first time jonah has nodded his head and actually meant yes. so admitting that he had a poop in his pants just adds to the memorableness of this first.
what a funny kid.

i went running tonight (a new "hobby" of mine) and this song came on as i was walking my last block home cooling down. you know when you hear a song and it just meets you right where you are. i actually walked up and down the block a couple of times and listened to it twice because it was just really speaking to me.
i decided i need to stop once in a while. be still. sit. listen.
i went on the women's retreat last month and was convicted of this, but i haven't followed through with a regular quite time. sure i read and i write and i go to bible study, but i never really just sit and listen.
being still is my next move. i'll let you know how it goes.
Love is Looking for you - Warren Barfield
Someone's calling your name
But you can't hear a sound
Cause you've allowed the noise to drown it out
Everywhere you go
You're never there
The thought of being afraid
Has you so scared
And all this time you've been looking for love
Love has been looking for you
Being still is your next move
Close your eyes and see the truth
You know that love is looking
Is looking for you
Yeah
Looking for you
There's only one way
The path there is different for each of us
I don't know what you need
But you need Jesus, yeah
Will you ever learn
It doesn't matter what you know
The less there is of you
The more room there is to grow
Can't you hear Him
Can't you hear Him calling out to you
Can't you feel Him
Can't you feel Him looking for you
